Iran - Prostitution Behind the Veil

// May 22nd, 2008 // No Comments » // documentary, middle east

Here is a great documentary about prostitution in “modern” Iran which I found particularly interesting and informative. From what I understand the main reason for the vast increase prostitution is due to the rising poverty level as well as the increase in drug abuse which is incredibly high in Iran.

The film appears very authentic and definitely worth your time.

President Apostate?

// May 13th, 2008 // No Comments » // middle east

The New York Times recently published a great op-ed piece called “President Apostate?” in short the author Edward Luttwak comments on the fact that by Muslim standards Obama committed the crime of apostasy (being born to a Muslim father) which jurists of most Sunni and Shiite schools consider punishable my death for all adults who leave Islam with out being under duress.

The author points out that most Islamic states do not actually carry out executions for apostasy however “another provision of Muslim law is perhaps more relevant: it prohibits punishment for any Muslim who kills any apostate, and effectively prohibits interference with such a killing.”

One can only wonder what huge security operations will need to be set in place to allow him to make the many visits he envisions in his effort to open dialog with other states, especially that the US has had tense relationship with.

Please note that currently Iran is considering making apostasy punishable by death, the law is currently pending before Iran’s Parliament.

// May 13th, 2008 // No Comments » // middle east

For those of you that like I have been following the news about the recent fighting in Lebanon and are a bit confused about who is who take a look at the following bio collection that the BBC put together. It’s a good start that shows a number of the main actors that we are recently hearing about.

And here is another site that gives us a brief rundown on the current “parties” and groups.

Let’s hope that things will calm down and that Lebanon will not be dragged into a more serious internal conflict.

May 9, 2008 by Amil Imani - Persian Journal

Israel, your people, as well as people of good will, are celebrating your sixtieth birthday. We, the children of Cyrus the Great, also would like to offer our heartfelt best wishes to you on this occasion. Yet, this, in fact, is your rebirth. Your birth occurred some 4,000 years ago.

Regrettably, your journey from your early beginning to the present has been fraught with great suffering. It is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of your people that they persisted in their valiant struggle to re-gather again in the land of their birth.
