School’s Out

A friend just emailed me the following cartoon from the Muslim Network for Bahai Rights, the comic is a perfect follow up for my last post. The cartoon is also available in Arabic and Persian, look HERE for more details.

Here is a section from their post which accompanied the cartoon which I found particularly interesting:

“Inspired by these human rights abuses we have created a comic to raise awareness on the absurdity of this crisis. Why do I call it a crisis? Because this is intellectual abuse. Baha’i youth are being victims of intellectual starvation, they are unable to acquire an education which is their given right as citizens. They are being isolated and humiliated on a daily basis. These governments, instead of protecting them, are denying them the chance to learn, which means that they are robbing them of their dreams, of having a career, a future, a life.”

Education Denied

Recently new developments have been taking place in Egypt that are rather worrisome. Local schools in Cairo have been turning Baha’i children away when their parents tried to enroll them due to a technical matter related to the ID papers not stating their religious affiliation. It appears as if the government is stalling the process of implementing the court ruling that awarded Bahais the opportunity to acquire the new ID cards issued by the government while leaving the religious check box blank. see HERE for a full article on the matter.

It important to understand that with out such a ID card one can not acquire a birth certificate for ones children, health care, enroll for higher education facilities and now one can not even enroll ones kids for primary schooling. (by the way, the list is much longer than state here, i think I might dedicate a post to making a complete list)

To put it lightly, this is ABSURD!!! It’s a shame that a great country like Egypt with its historic past is reverting to such methods and is denying its own citizens access to basic rights such as the education of children.

The Girl Effect

I just came across the following two clips that outline the positive effects when adolescent girls are educated. The Girl Effect is a non-profit that is sponsored by the Nike Foundation. I think their efforts are truly praiseworthy and hope that they will manage influencing the very needed change and advancement in this field
